In 2002 Ron & Susan elected to do a major remodel on an existing structure on the property rather than build a new home.  They committed to build an environmentally friendly, energy efficient home using recycled building materials wherever practical.  The architect, designer, and counselor is Susan's younger sister, Jana Rodriguez of Twin Rivers Studio in San Marcos, Texas.  Many of the windows and doors were purchased from Habitat for Humanity's ReStore, a project to keep unwanted building materials out of the landfill while raising funds for Habitat's building projects.  The house also features an on-demand water heater (rather than a traditional tanked model), solar lighting, and an outdoor shower to take advantage of the warm South Texas weather and prevent overburdening the home's efficient A/C system with unnecessary humidity.
